FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE HARD TO SHOP FOR—including you.
Custom Gifts & Specialty Pieces
The practical, personal, sentimental, ridiculous-in-the-best-way ideas that refuse to fit neatly into any other category.

This Is Where the Good Oddball Ideas Go
Not every project is a cutting board, cribbage board, sign, humidor, or serving piece. Some ideas arrive as a half-formed sentence: “Could you make something that…?” Others begin with a person who already owns everything, a wedding that deserves more than another registry item, an inside joke, a practical annoyance, or the simple conviction that something should exist even though nobody sells it.
That is what this page is for. Custom gifts, specialty pieces, useful experiments, heartfelt keepsakes—and yes, gifts for yourself. If the idea calls for hardwood, engraving, carving, inlay, sublimation, magnets, clever storage, or a combination that has not been tried before, it is worth a conversation.
A WEDDING GIFT WITH A LITTLE MORE SPIRIT
The Buckleys’ Cherry Shotski

Made as a wedding gift for friends, the Buckleys’ Shotski began with a piece of cherry hardwood and an idea that was equal parts celebration, personalization, and practical engineering. The family name and wedding date were engraved into the board, while a gold pearlescent epoxy inlay catches the light and gives the lettering a warm, celebratory shimmer against the cherry grain.
The shot glasses are not simply balanced in holes and trusted to behave. Each glass has a magnetic base that holds it securely to the Shotski when the board is lifted and tipped, keeping every pour where it belongs. The glasses still lift out easily for serving and cleaning, then snap back into position when it is time for another round.
It is funny without being disposable, personal without becoming precious, and built for the exact moment it was meant to create: friends lined up together, raising a toast to the newlyweds. That combination—an unforgettable idea made genuinely usable—is exactly what custom specialty work should be.

SOMETIMES THE GIFT BECOMES PART OF THE STORY
Jamie’s Heart-Shaped Keepsake Box
This purpleheart keepsake box was made for my niece Jamie during a frightening chapter after a breast cancer diagnosis at a young age. Now thankfully in remission, her strength and outlook made the piece even more meaningful to build.
Her name, a sunflower representing hope, words from A. A. Milne, and a handwritten message from her uncle were engraved into a box shaped specifically for her. It was also one of my earliest multi-piece CNC projects. I can still see what I would do differently now, but that is part of its importance: this gift marks the beginning of the road that became 3 Dogs Woodworking.

USEFUL DOES NOT HAVE TO BE BORING
The SmashMaster™ Burger Press
The SmashMaster™ is a handcrafted hardwood answer to a very serious question: how do you get a better crust on a smash burger without reaching for another anonymous kitchen gadget? A broad pressing surface delivers even pressure, while the shaped hardwood handle keeps the tool comfortable and controlled over a hot griddle.
Built one at a time from contrasting hardwoods and finished for durability, it brings real workshop character to burger night. Wood combinations and engraving can be tailored for the cook, pitmaster, family, or backyard legend receiving it—or for the person ordering one because their own grill setup deserves better.

Practical. Sentimental. Funny. Completely Unclassifiable.
A key holder can become a small piece of wall art. A family photograph can glow from a glass night light. A coffee mug can carry the joke that only three people understand. A miniature picnic table can make the squirrels look more civilized than anyone expected. None of these needs to belong to the same product family—the connection is that each began with a specific person or idea.

Yes, You Are Allowed to Be the Occasion
Not every custom piece needs a wedding date, retirement party, birthday, or holiday attached to it. Sometimes you have lived with an idea long enough. Sometimes the thing you want does not exist in the size, material, or style that feels right. Sometimes you simply want something made well, with your name, your joke, your dog, your workshop, or your particular way of doing things built into it.
A gift for yourself is still a custom gift. No justification required.
Bring the Idea Before You Solve Every Detail
You do not need a finished drawing or technical plan. Start with who it is for, what you want it to do, when you need it, and what makes the idea meaningful or funny. Materials and methods can be worked out from there: hardwood species, engraving, CNC carving, epoxy inlay, magnetic hardware, laser work, sublimated elements, storage, mounting, and finishing.
Some ideas will need to change shape to become safe, durable, or practical. Others may lead somewhere better than the first sketch. That back-and-forth is part of custom work—not an obstacle to it.
